Lent in a Baptist Church?

I remember the first time I heard about the season of Lent.

I grew up in Southern Baptist churches. We celebrated Easter and Christmas. Lent and advent were just not on our calendar.

In college, the Wesley Center sponsored a Linten (I mean Lenten) luncheon. I still don't know if it registered what that meant. I did go for a few cheap meals though.

Then in Seminary, I was on staff at a Disciples of Christ church. We observed Lent.

When I served as pastor, I emphasized the season of Lent. My first sermon I preached was based on Psalm 51. I deeply resonate with the idea of a broken and contrite heart. I want that to be my story. I don't view lent, sin, confession, repentance as negative words as some people do. I view them as part of our faith journey. God wants us to come to him, not assured of our goodness, but assured of God's goodness and love.

This year, I need Lent. I need the spiritual discipline of Lent. I need to be reminded of God's sacrifice for me. I need to fast, pray, and come to God with a broken and contrite heart. My life is out of balance and I need to spend time in silence and solitude.

I wonder about other Baptist pastors and their journey with God through the season of Lent.
